Why Your AC Runs All Day But Never Feels Cold Enough

If your air conditioner is running almost non-stop but the air coming out of the vents never quite feels cold, most homeowners assume the refrigerant is low. Sometimes that's true. But a technician's first move should be measuring the temperature split, the difference between the air going into the system and the air coming back out. Get that number wrong and you can spend weeks chasing a refrigerant problem when the real issue was airflow the whole time.

What a temperature split actually measures

A normal temperature split on a residential system is usually somewhere between 16 and 22 degrees Fahrenheit, measured with a thermometer at the return air grille and again at a supply vent close to the air handler. If the return air reads 78 degrees and the supply air reads 58, that's a 20 degree split, a system doing exactly what it should. If that gap shrinks to 10 or 12 degrees, the compressor may be running fine and the coil may be cold, but not enough air is moving across it to carry the cooling out into your rooms.

Why airflow is usually the real culprit

A low split gets blamed on refrigerant more often than it should, because a quick check will often show slightly low suction pressure and it's tempting to call that a leak. In a lot of cases, restricted airflow is the actual cause, and adding refrigerant to a system that's already starved for air can make the problem worse instead of better. Before anyone opens a refrigerant gauge, it's worth ruling out the simpler, cheaper causes first.

  • A filter that hasn't been changed in months and is packed with dust
  • A return air grille that's too small or partly blocked by furniture
  • Ductwork that was undersized, kinked, or crushed during a remodel
  • Closed or blocked supply vents in rooms nobody uses
  • A dirty evaporator coil restricting the airflow moving across it

Why this hits harder in a Cypress summer

Harris County humidity puts extra load on a marginal system in a way a drier climate never would. A unit that's mildly airflow starved in April can still seem to keep up fine. By August, with attics regularly climbing past 140 degrees and the compressor running nearly around the clock, that same restriction turns into a system that runs all day and still can't hold the house at 74. The problem didn't get worse. The margin for error just disappeared.

Why duct design and balancing matter more than people think

That matters here specifically, because a temperature split problem is very often a duct or airflow design issue rather than something you fix by swapping a single part. A straightforward way to check this yourself is to ask for the numbers in writing, the return air temperature and the supply air temperature, not just a verbal "it's low." A technician measuring properly will have both readings within a couple of minutes, and the math behind the split is simple enough that you can do it yourself with a phone calculator while they're still standing there.

If your system feels like it's working overtime without actually cooling the house, ask whoever comes out to measure the temperature split before anyone talks about refrigerant. It's a five minute check that tells you whether you're about to pay to fix the right problem.
